It would be great if you could use this Headline Animator —
— with every major email application, but the unfortunate reality is that only a small set of popular choices currently provide this capability.
We’ve got instructions for Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and Yahoo! Mail. We also list one workaround for using HTML signatures with GMail.
Mozilla Thunderbird
Microsoft Outlook Express
Microsoft Outlook 2003
Yahoo! Mail
Follow these steps to use Headline Animator with an existing email account set up within Yahoo! Mail. Please note that these steps only apply if you use Yahoo! Mail in Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or Internet Explorer 5.5 and later. Users of Yahoo! Mail in other browsers will not be able to use “rich text” signatures.
- Sign in to Yahoo! Mail.
- Choose the “Options” link from the list of account links on the right hand side of the home page.
- Choose the “Signature” link from the middle column of account option choices. A signature editor should appear.
- Make sure you choose “Color and Graphics” as your signature option; “Plain” is the default choice.
- Copy this code —<p style="margin-top:10px; margin-bottom:0; padding-bottom:0; text-align:center; line-height:0"><a target="_blank" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/SSNqH/~6/2"><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogspot/SSNqH.2.gif" alt="MOBILE PHONE" style="border:0"></a></p><p style="margin-top:5px; padding-top:0; font-size:x-small; text-align:center"><a href="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/headlineanimator/install?id=7l9m8i2oh0d6jdruq7lcafiouo&w=2" onclick="window.open(this.href, 'haHowto', 'width=520,height=600,toolbar=no,address=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars'); return false" target="_blank">↑ Grab this Headline Animator</a></p>
— and paste into the editor area.Tip: If you want the signature to appear automatically at the end of each message, also check the “Add signature to all outgoing messages” checkbox. - Click [Save].
- Compose a new message. Make certain that the “Use my signature” checkbox is checked before you send the message. Your recipient will see your Headline Animator graphic if their email application supports standard HTML email.
Workaround for GMail
GMail does not permit HTML signatures using its web-based interface; only plain text signatures may be entered directly through the GMail website.
However, as John Lamansky pointed out, people who use GMail’s POP3 access features can then use Thunderbird, Outlook or another email HTML signature-aware email application to incorporate their Headline Animator. The HTML email you compose with one of these external applications will be sent through exactly as-is by GMail, and your recipients will see the signature as long as they are using an HTML-compatible email application (which includes GMail itself, of course).
Amit Agarwal also has a workaround for incorporating HTML directly into the composition window in GMail (you must be using Firefox or IE for this to work): http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-to-add-html-signatures-with-images.html
Workaround for Apple Mail
If you have a strong technical constitution, you can try the HTML/CSS workaround provided at this site: http://allforces.com/2006/04/14/css-signatures/
Microsoft Entourage: Not Yet
We do not know of any way to incorporate external HTML (such as Headline Animator) into an HTML signature within Microsoft Entourage.
